What is the blast yeild of a minuteman 3 ICBM?
Best Answer - Chosen by Asker
They no longer MIRV based on the last nuclear summits we've agreed to in the early 90's. Since these ICBMs are only delivery vehicles, they can carry war heads of all sizes, therefore the blast yield would vary depending on the payload. Also, the site of detonation, ie, ground-level vs. air burst would determine a 'blast yield.'
For a strategic nuke in the 500 kiloton range, the blast radius can be broken down into several categories, namely:
1.Vaporization of matter by the tremendous temperatures within the fireball;
2. Prompt radiation dose carried by neutrons and gamma rays from the fission reactions;
3. Thermal radiation: heating, burning, and charring by the thermal energy radiated by the fireball;
4. Delayed radiation doses from radioactive fallout in the form of fission products and neutron-activation products deposited downwind of the explosion; and let's don't forget the
5. Shock wave propagating outward from the blast, carrying a pulse of crushing overpressure followed by powerful winds. This over pressure would be as follows:
15 psi: 1.21 miles
5 psi: 2.23 miles
2 psi: 3.91 miles
1 psi: 5.75 miles
0.25 psi: 14.76 miles
0.1 psi: 30.24 miles

Overpressure Key:
15 psi Complete destruction of reinforced concrete structures, such as skyscrapers, will occur
Between 7 psi and 15 psi, there will be severe to total damage to these types of structures.
5 psi Complete destruction of ordinary houses, and moderate to severe damage to reinforced concrete structures, will occur
2 psi Severe damage to ordinary houses, and light to moderate damage to reinforced concrete structures, will occur
1 psi Light damage to all structures, and light to moderate damage to ordinary houses, will occur
0.25 psi Most glass surfaces, such as windows, will shatter within this ring, some with enough force to cause injury.
